A MUTARE woman dragged her ailing ex-husband to court last week claiming $250 maintenance for the welfare of their six children.

Manica Post reported that Maxwell Chindowa was hauled before the courts by his wife, Josephine Zvanyanga. She told the court that Chindowa was not contributing anything towards the welfare of their children. The pair appeared before Yeukai Chigodora.

"This man is neglecting his family therefore I pray he should pay $250 every month as maintenance for his six children. He is a vendor who earns about $500 per month," she said.

When asked why he was not fending for his family, Chindowa told the court that he was not employed.

"Your Worship, I am not even employed. I am ill since last year in October. She deserted me because of my illness and opted for another man. I have medical documents to prove my case and I have been struggling to make ends meet," he said.

"I was once an airtime vendor and I was realising a profit of $5 per day. I am currently staying with my sister in Dangamvura. However, I am pleading with the court to spare me maintenance till I find somewhere to work," said Chindowa.

He was ordered him to pay $60.

"I understand your plight that you are ill, but that cannot spare you from performing your responsibilities as a father. You are therefore ordered to pay $60 per month as maintenance of your six children," said Chigodora.
