A political commentator Budiriro Peter Moyo has warned critiques to stop labeling the Acting mayor of Harare Chris Mbanga of being a Zanu PF apologist or Central Intelligence Organisation saying he is a known MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai's Cheif election agent for 2013.
Mbanga took over the council after Local Government minister Saviour Kasukuwere suspended Bernard Manyenyeni for violating local government Act by endorsing the appointment of James Mushove as town clerk without approval of the local government board.
"Before you rush to label him a Zanu PF apologist or a planted CIO as many in the opposition circles love to rush to the silly conclusions all the time, you must know that Mbanga as Tsvangirai 's chief election agent for the 2013 elections holds powerful backing," he said. "One thing secretly happened after 2013 is that the heavy defeat left MDC T president and his kitchen cabinet heavily exposed within his own party."
He said sources in high circles tell me that Tsvangirai was reduced to just a figurehead who no one within the party no longer listened to.
"In most cases when he phoned these council mayors he would be put on hold for minutes on end or be told to 'call later I'm busy'. I am told the Harare and Chtungwiza mayor are notorious for this behaviour. This would explain Tsvangirai's subdued nature after the elections and until recently," he said. "While some of you saw these rallies he has been pointlessly holding as a challenge for the 2018 elections which are still so far away to be holding rallies, they are actually like those held by Zanu PF, a fight for the soul of the party and relevance within his own party."
Moyo said the suspension of Harare Mayor has maybe given him a chance to reassert his authority at Town House.
"We see his former chief election agent, Mbanga not hesitating to take over and immediately do what needs to be done to hold fort. A court case can be postponed indefinitely while Tsvangirai consolidates his power at Town House," he said.
