A WOMAN has been banned from driving for a year after running over and killing a motorcyclist. Sibonisiwe Ndlovu, who runs a popular restaurant in Gwanda, was on Saturday fined $300 and her licence was suspended for a year for the accident that claimed Zamani Ndlovu's life.
She pleaded guilty to culpable homicide when she appeared before Gwanda magistrate, Konzanai Affarat.
In mitigation, Sibonisiwe said she did not intentionally cause Ndlovu's death. She also described the accident victim as a family friend. "He used to do welding jobs with my brother. From there, I started taking him as a family friend. I went through a lot of trauma because of his death and I had to assist with funeral expenses," said Sibonisiwe.
Prosecutor Takunda Mafudze said Sibonisiwe was a first offender who showed contrition and should be treated with lenience.
Mafudze said on February 9, Sibonisiwe was driving from Gwanda towards Bulawayo and the late Ndlovu was biking to his rural home in Matshetsheni when he was hit from behind.
When they arrived at Matshetsheni turn off, at the 105 kilometre peg along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge road, Ndlovu indicated to turn right going in the direction of his rural home and the businesswoman hit him as she attempted to overtake.
Ndlovu was thrown into a ditch and died on the spot.
An ambulance crew called to the scene pronounced him dead on arrival.
