Zimbabwe's Consul General to South Africa, Godfrey Magwenzi has congratulated the Ministries of Home Affairs of South Africa and Zimbabwe for the successful completion of the documentation of Zimbabweans who were living and working in the neighbouring country without documents, the ZBC News reported.
Under the documentation exercise, the South African government had given Zimbabweans without proper documents from July 2010 to December 31st to regularise their stay.
By the end of the deadline, the Registrar General's office received 69 000 passport applications and all, except less than 100, were processed and forwarded to the South African Ministry of Home Affairs.
The South African Permit-issuing Office received 275 000 permit applications and the issuing of the permits for the applicants is nearing completion.
Magwenzi described the documentation exercise as a remarkable success and commended the Registrar General's office and the South African government for a job well done.
Magwenzi confirmed that deportation of those who either did not apply for documents or those who continue to enter the country illegally is now underway.
He said the deportations started early last month for those who were staying at Lindela Transit Camp in Johannesburg with 691 in the first week, 671 in the second week and 260 last week, while other deportations are being carried in the surrounding areas near the Zimbabwe/South African border in Mpumalanga Province and others.
