Police use Stop signs to rake in more cash in spot fines

Harare motorists have accused the police for resorting to the use of Stop signs on the roads to rake more money through spot fines.
Harare Residents Trust stated that motorists in Harare experience nightmares with police using the Stop signs as a tool for massive fundraising.
"One such stop sign is found at the intersection of Hebert Chitepo Avenue and Mazowe Street, where the police are always stationed outside the Econet Shop," said the trust. "The stop sign is in such a place that the police at the Econet shop would not be able to see if the motorist has stopped their vehicle or not before filtering into their full view, when turning left into Chitepo, emerging from Mazowe Street."
The trust said there are no electronic cameras to assist the police, but whenever they stop motorists they allege that one has not stopped at the Stop Sign, yet they wont be able to see it from their operating point outside Econet.
"These police officers are illegally charging people using a Stop Sign they do not see. They demand US$20 from every motorist turning left, who happens to be stopped," said the trust. "A motorist who stops by that road sign cannot see the traffic along Chitepo because there are walls on both sides, which block this clear view of passing traffic, which forces all careful drivers to drive to the intersection, either going to the righto or to the left, and if they choose the left they are stopped by the police who claim that the motorist did not stop."
The trust said police are definitely stealing and fleecing the motoring public in the guise of maintaining law and order.
