A WOMAN died on the spot while two of her relatives were admitted in hospital after a vehicle they were travelling in collided with a truck near Insuza. Acting police national traffic spokesperson Assistant Inspector Clareser Muhonde confirmed the accident that took place at the 111km peg along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway at 1.45 AM on Tuesday.

The deceased and the injured, who are yet to be identified by the police, are alleged to be members of the same family.

"We can confirm an accident that occurred at the 111km peg along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls road involving a Hino truck which had one passenger and a family that was driving a Toyota Corolla with Namibian registration," said Asst Insp Muhonde.

She said the driver of the truck is alleged to have encroached onto the lane of oncoming traffic resulting in the head on collision.

Asst Insp Muhonde said the truck dragged the vehicle for a few metres resulting in the death of one passenger.

She said the injured are admitted at the United Bulawayo Hospitals.

When The Chronicle arrived at the scene of the accident at around 2AM, the body of the deceased was still in the wreckage.

The injured had already been ferried to St Luke's hospital before they were later transferred to Bulawayo.

The truck driver, Norman Sibanda, who was still sitting in his vehicle, said: "I was on my way to Hwange to carry coal when all of a sudden the driver of the other car encroached onto my lane.

"They were in my lane and I swerved to the right to avoid them but I think the driver panicked and tried to avoid me by going back to her lane resulting in the head on collision."
