A WOMAN from Pelandaba suburb in Bulawayo allegedly ignored her 17-year-old niece's pleas for help when she was being raped by her husband.

The woman, whose name was not disclosed in court, allegedly turned a blind eye as her husband Jacob Nkomo, 30, raped the girl.
Nkomo yesterday appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Themba Chimiso facing three counts of rape.

He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to May 31.

The court heard that the girl allegedly told her aunt, on all three occasions, that her husband was raping her but she allegedly ordered her to keep quiet before threatening her.

At one time, the court heard, Nkomo told the girl to seek answers from her mother about why he was having sexual intercourse with her.

Her mother's whereabouts were not disclosed in court.

Prosecuting, Mufaro Mageza said the girl was raped over a period of three years; in 2014, 2015 and in March this year.

During the 2014 incident, Mageza said the minor was in a spare bedroom when Nkomo called her to his room.

"She sat on top of a plastic container as she waited to hear what the accused wanted. The accused pulled her onto the bed and took a blanket and covered her with it. The accused went on to tear the complainant's skirt, pant and forcibly had sexual intercourse with the complainant," said Mageza.

"In 2015 at around 10PM, the accused asked the complainant to accompany him to Iminyela shops to buy some cigarettes. They used a foot path which passes through a bushy area where the accused forced the complainant to lie on the ground. He forcibly removed her pant as well as skirt and had sexual intercourse with her once without her consent. The accused then told the complainant to get answers from her mother as to why he was raping her."

In March this year, the court heard that Nkomo once again asked his victim to accompany him to the shops during the night and raped her.

On all three occasions, the girl reported the matter to her aunt who allegedly ignored her pleas and told her to keep silent. She later told her other aunt who exposed the alleged rape.
