A MAN whose wife had to give birth inside a pit toilet after clinic nurses turned them away wants Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi to intervene.

Daily Sun reported that angry husband Sandile Shongwe (29), said he took his wife, Ntomfuthi Khoza (26) to Matsulu Clinic outside Mbombela at about 1am last Monday.

"After calling the ambulance without any luck, I called a taxi to transport my wife because her waters had broken.

"Nurses checked her and told us to go back home because the baby was still far from being born. I told them we couldn't go home because my wife was in pain.

"They told me to shut up because they knew what they were doing."

Sandile said when he asked the nurses to allow his wife to stay in the clinic because it was dark and rainy outside, they chased them out. "As the labour pains became stronger my wife rushed to a pit toilet where she screamed and delivered the baby."

Once the baby was born, Ntomfuthi was eventually assisted and discharged in the morning.

Taxi driver Lucky Khundula, who went with the couple to the clinic, said his own wife had a miscarriage while waiting for help at the clinic. "When I took her there they ignored us and I decided to go to Rob Ferreira Hospital, but could not be helped there because we didn't have a letter. I lost my baby because these nurses have a bad attitude."

Health spokesman Christopher Nobela said they will investigate once they have a full report from the clinic. "We will request a report with details of what happened and who was on duty when the incident took place." –
