Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko says all Zimbabweans are equal regardless of their cultural or ethnic backgrounds.

Mphoko made the remarks during the official launch of the National Culture Week at Godlwayo Cultural Centre in Filabusi, Matabeleland South province yesterday.

"Despite challenges presented by mordernisation, Zimbabweans should continue to  protect and promote their culture. There is need for mutual respect and equality among all Zimbabweans despite various ethnic and cultural backgrounds," said Vice President Mphoko.

The Minister of Promotion and Preservation of National Culture and Heritage, Abednico Ncube said the government has since reviewed the culture policy as part of efforts towards building national orientation and identity.

The launch of the National Culture Week gave various communities across Matabeleland South province an opportunity to showcase their rich cultural heritage and diversity through song, dance, poetry and traditional crafts.

The rousing welcome and homage paid to the host chief, Vezi Maduna and his subjects also highlighted the high regard in which traditional chiefs are held as custodians of culture and leaders in their communities.

The National Culture Week is organised to celebrate the World Culture Day that falls on 21st of  May.

This year's celebrations, which are running under the theme: 'Towards Increased Community Participation,' seeks to ensure that people across the cultural divide partake in cultural activities and discourse.
