THE son of first President of independent Zimbabwe, the late Canaan Banana, has said he is not gunning for the country's presidency but to be a legislator.
Nathan recently joined main stream politics and has formed a political party, Freedom Justice Coalition of Zimbabwe (FJCZ), to contest in the 2018 general elections.
In a statement issued today (Wednesday) Nathan said there is confusion with regards to his official entry into Zimbabwe politics 'and I thought I should clarify my position'.
'I am currently focussing my efforts on 'Constituency' entry point [Member of Parliament], though I have been elected as an Interim President for Freedom Justice Coalition Zimbabwe Party that is still in it's teething stages (structuring nationally)' he said.
'My short term goals are to work with all key Stake Holders in my local constituency and then gradually identify partners across the country irrespective of their political affiliation to work with in seeking to share ideas on how best we can deal with some of the pressing issues.
' This will also involve negotiating coalitions in terms of agreeing not to contest against each other but support a particular candidate in that area.
Only resource permitting and if Freedom Justice Coalition Zimbabwe party at their elective Congress in 2017 choose to elect me as President and insist on my candidacy for 2018 will I then consider that option.
' Currently my focus for 2018 is Luveve Constituency winning which would then open up prospects for a 2022 Presidential Candidate.
'I think right now Zimbabweans have a good number of Presidential Candidates to choose from and I wish them all the best in 2018'.
