Police have instructed farmers taking their produce to the market not to travel at night in order to avoid accidents, a senior cop said.

National Police Spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said they are deeply concerned with loss of lives through road accidents and urged motorists to observe traffic rules.

"We are urging motorists to avoid speeding and to exercise caution when travelling.

"Farmers should not travel at night with their produce as they risk their lives," said Charamba.

"All drivers should take note that night driving is risky due to poor visibility which is made worse by narrow roads and potholes.

"Some motorists are driving with defective lights at night and in most cases reaction time is slow due to visibility problems.

"Other drivers will also be speeding despite these highlighted conditions.

"Motorists should plan their journeys to curtail road accidents, where possible night driving should be avoided at all cost.

"It is sad that we have lost so many lives on our roads and police are passionately appealing to motorists to schedule their journeys.

"Police have actually noted that motorists do not take heed of our calls to exercise caution and restraint due to conditions on the roads.

"They only cry foul after the accident. This attitude should change. We are encouraging members of the public to carry their identity cards in order to assist police in the identification process in the event of traffic accidents" she said in a statement.
