Accident death toll rises to 16

The death toll in the Zimunya accident which killed 12 people on the spot on Friday has risen to 16 following the passing on of 4 others at the Mutare Provincial Hospital.

Out of the 10 people who were injured, 8 of them are in a critical condition.

Police in Manicaland confirmed the accident which occurred at the 15-kilometre peg along the Mutare-Chimanimani highway.

Dangamvura legislator Esau Mupfumi and Manicaland provincial administrator Mr Fungai Mbetsa have visited the injured at the Mutare provincial hospital and later met with bereaved families.

They described the accident as a dark chapter in the province.

Meanwhile, police have positively identified 10 of the victims but their names are being withheld until their next of kin are informed.

Twelve people died on the spot when a Toyota Granvia burst its rear tyre and encroached onto the lane of oncoming traffic resulting in a head-on collision.
