Over 800 000 criminal cases in 2015

Police handled over 800 000 alleged criminal violations in 2015, with traffic offences constituting over half of those cases, data from the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency shows.

Overally, all cases increased from 761 043 in 2014 to 802 399 last year.

A Zimstat report recently released details the number of traffic offences as follows:

No driver's licence - 13 800

No insurance - 28 033

Reckless driving - 418

Negligent driving - 5 619

Driving without a vehicle licence disc - 37 419

Speeding - 34 782

Drunk driving - 87

Breathalyser offences - 29

Other moving vehicle offences - 91 080

Vehicle Licence Act violations - 42 615

Other violations - 95 657

Road motor transportation - 125 102.

Rape - 7 752 cases

Murder - 1 387

Assault - 69 641

Grievous bodily harm - 235.

Culpable homicide incidents increased from 337 in 2010 to 1 150 last year, and fraud cases leapt from 2 624 to 11 207 during that period.

Roughly 1 387 murders were recorded in 2015, up from 638 in 2010.

Conversely, illegal abortions dropped from a five-year high of 114 to 96 last year.

Car theft and dangerous drug possession accounted for 364 and 311 cases, respectively, in 2015.
