Zanu PF controversial activist Energy Mutodi has said President Robert Mugabe's efforts to curb corruption will not yield any progress because most of the people linked to the vice are close to him.

"President Robert Mugabe's noble ambition to curb corruption in government will not achieve any positive result as most of those being fingered in corrupt deals are well connected and precisely untouchable," Mutodi posted on Facebook.

"A day after state media published a list of individuals being investigated by the country's anti-graft body, corrupt sharks in President Mugabe's ruling Zanu PF party quickly described the attempts to bring them to book as political, telling the press that they were being punished for supporting the veteran ruler's continued hold to power."

He said most of those targeted by the anti-corruption commission belong to a G40 faction that enjoys the support of First Lady Grace Mugabe.

"Zimbabwe's economy is currently on its knees mainly due to economic mismanagement and rampant corruption with Ministers and senior civil servants topping the list of the most corrupt individuals. Ministers in particular appoint loyal board members whom they compel to allocate tenders to their proxies thereby siphoning parastatal funds and investing the loot outside the country," he said.

"During his early days in office, President Mugabe used to be very efficient in combating graft, and most of his lieutenants fingered in corruption would hang themselves as soon as they got exposed, fearing the ruthless punishment they would receive from him."

"However, the situation is no longer the same at the moment mainly due to factionalism and tribalism," he added.

Mutodi said many G40 members including a few others in the rival Team Lacoste faction are using factions to protect their ill-gotten wealth and are able to intimidate anyone assigned to deal with them.

"It is therefore practically impossible for the anti-corruption commission to make any impact in combating the scourge. It is like sending zebras to scare away lions from their prey," he said.
