Retired Brigadier General Muchemwa dies in Egypt, repatriation in progress

A delegation comprising family members and government officials are headed for Egypt to repatriate the body of Retired Brigadier General Muchemwa who died on Sunday in the North African country.

Retired Brigadier General Muchemwa was Special Disability Advisor in the Office of the President and Cabinet, and is a former Healthy Minister.

Son to the war veteran, Fungai Makoni Muchemwa revealed that his father died from peripheral nuropath cancer, which had affected his nerves.

It is believed that the disease resulted from oregano phosphate poisoning from the war and Fungai said his father had lived with the condition for the past 24 years.

Brother to the late Retired Brigadier General Muchemwa, Mr Killian Muchemwa said the family has lost a loving and principled man.

Born in Mhondoro Ngezi in 1945, Retired Brigadier General Muchemwa attended St Micheals Primary School and Kutama before going to Fletcher High School in Gweru.

He thereafter enrolled at the University of Rhodesia in 1967, where led a series of students demonstrations against the white regime, resulting in his expulsion from university.

In 1970, Retired Brigadier General Muchemwa left Zimbabwe to further his studies in England and is among the first qualified medical doctors to join liberation the struggle.
