A BULAWAYO woman yesterday withdrew rape charges against a kombi driver who raped her daughter saying the man had apologised to the family.
Brian Gumede, 26, allegedly raped the 17-year-old schoolgirl six times during trips into the city centre after he was hired to ferry the pupil from Cement Siding suburb to school.
Gumede appeared before regional magistrate Chrispen Mberewere yesterday and was discharged when the girl's mother submitted her withdrawal affidavit.
"I'm the mother of the complainant and I consent to her decision to withdraw the matter against Brian Gumede. Brian's family came and apologised to her and to our family and it was her decision to forgive him and withdraw the charges," reads the affidavit.
Simbarashe Manyiwa for the State alleged that Gumede was hired to ferry school children, including the girl, to different schools in town.
"Sometime between September and October 2015, the girl remained at school for sports and finished way after other children had been taken home. At around 5PM, she was picked up by Gumede who took her to a city lodge on their way home," said Manyiwa.
He said Gumede raped the girl once and asked her not to tell anyone, a request she complied with.
"After a few days whilst Gumede was taking the children to school, he dropped all of them and remained with her alone. On their way to the girl's school, Gumede pulled off the road and raped the girl once and then took her to school," Manyiwa said.
He said Gumede repeated the act on several occasions.
"On the last incident, Gumede picked up the pupils from school and drove them home. He first delivered all children and remained with his victim. He later drove into a compound at Cement Siding and decided to park in a secluded place.
"He parked near an unfinished house and raped the girl once. The girl kept all the issues to herself until she confided in her relatives who made a police report," said Manyiwa.
