The Independent says it has top Zanu-PF insiders saying President Mugabe personally blocked businessman Philip Chiyangwa's bid to contest the chairmanship of Zanu-PF's Mash West province despite some politburo member's spirited fight to fast track his re-admission ahead of the conference next month.
The unnamed insiders said there was a heated debate at last week's Politburo meting over whether Chiyangwa should be allowed to contest the provincial chairmanship.
The debate reportedly fuelled internal divisions. The insiders further said President Mugabe reminded the Politburo that Chiyangwa should not be allowed to join the race for the chairmanship because he was still considered a "security threat" because of espionage case he previously faced.
Meanwhile there are reports that parliamentarians from across the political divide do not want early elections in sharp contrast to President Mugabe and PM Morgan Tsvangirai, as they believe polls will prematurely end their term.
