The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructure Development is set to descend on mining towns across the country to assess the levels of road infrastructure investment with the objective of compelling the entities to increase spending on road rehabilitation.
Concerns have been raised over the poor state of road infrastructure around mining towns with communities and the government accusing the entities of neglecting social investment initiatives.
Chairperson of the portfolio committee, Dexter Nduna said through the nationwide tour, they seek to engage mining entities so that there is increased investment in road rehabilitation around their communities.
The committee is expected to visit Mutoko as its first port of call before heading to Manicaland Province.
Granite mining in Mutoko has been a source of conflict between the company and the villagers with the company accused of failing to repair roads.
Given the history of reluctance by the mining companies to rehabilitate the road network around their communities, the committee says it will not hesitate to propose a road rehabilitation tax.
