Civil servants agree to new pay dates meeting

A MEETING to discuss civil servants' pay dates will be held in Harare today.
The Apex Council boycotted an indaba called by Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Prisca Mupfumira on Monday.
The civil servants body accused the government of making decisions without consulting them, calling for meetings informally and on short notice.
The Apex council said the Government was undermining them by calling them for a meeting after having decided the outcome of the meeting.
In a letter addressed to the Apex Council president, Mrs Cecilia Alexander, yesterday, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Mr Ngoni Masoka, said the meeting would be held at 4.30PM at the National Social Security Authority (Nssa) Building in Harare.
"The Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare is inviting one representative from each union or association on June 22, 2016 in the 11th floor boardroom at Nssa building at 4.30PM.
"The agenda of the meeting is as follows: remarks by Minister Mupfumira, pay dates schedule for June 2016, issues from staff associations and unions, issues from the government and any other business," said Mr Masoka.
Mrs Alexander yesterday confirmed that the Apex Council had resolved to attend the meeting to discuss the way forward.
"The Government has considered our concern and made a formal invitation. Although the invitation is still on short notice, we'll definitely attend the meeting because we've a lot of burning issues to discuss with the Government.
"We will give priority to the issue of new pay dates because that's the burning issue at the moment," said Mrs Alexander.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Mr Willard Manungo, on Thursday wrote to the Civil Service Commission (CSC) proposing new staggered pay dates for civil servants for this month.
According to the proposal, members of the Zimbabwe National Army will be paid on June 27, followed by police and prison officers on June 30. The education sector will be paid on July 7, followed by health workers and the rest of the civil service on July 14. Pensioners will get their dues on July 19.
Minister Mupfumira conceded that the government was facing revenue challenges due to the depressed economy but reiterated its commitment to pay its workers.
