A 44-year-old Harare man yesterday appeared in court for allegedly raping his two daughters aged seven years and 16-years-old, claiming it was his duty to teach them how to perform in bed. He was charged with three counts of rape when he appeared before magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe. He was remanded in custody to June 28 and advised to apply bail at the High Court.
Allegations are that sometime in January 2011, the man called his 7-year-old daughter into his bedroom while his wife had gone to church. The court heard that he removed his daughter's clothes and raped her before ordering her not to tell anyone.
It is alleged that again in 2011 in Hatcliffe, the man called the 7-year-old girl again into his bedroom and raped her, taking advantage of the fact that they were alone at the house and also told her not to divulge the offence to anyone.
The court heard that during that same year, the man called his 16-year-old daughter into his bedroom and raped her and told her that it was his duty to train his daughters how to perform sexual intercourse.
It is the State's case that from that day, the man raped his 16-year-old daughter every Wednesday since his wife would have gone to attend prayer sessions at church. It is alleged the two girls never revealed the evil act to anyone since they were afraid of their father.
The court heard that the 16-year-old one day braved the situation and refused further harassment by his father. It is alleged that she told her mother about the rape sometime this month and she sat down with both her daughters listening to how they were being abused by their father.
It is alleged that the girl's mother approached her husband about the abuses but she was threatened with eviction from their matrimonial home.
The court heard that the mother then told her church elders about the abuse.
It is the State's case that on June 22 police got a tip-off of the abuses through an anonymous caller and the two girls and their mother were invited to the police station, leading to the man's arrest.
