Chiredzi residents should brace for a prolonged dry spell as Chiredzi Town Council embarks on a massive maintenance of its water system which started last week.
Chiredzi Town Secretary Charles Muchatukwa confirmed the development to The Mirror and said repairing of valves, carrying out of a massive cleaning of water tanks at the water system as well as cleaning of canals is now underway. He said the operation is an annual thing which is aimed at restoring efficiency in movement of water to the town and the program is being undertaken together with ZINWA.
"The supply of water is below normal since we are undertaking some repairs as well as clean-ups at the water works, main tanks and canals which bring water to the Lowveld. This will take almost two weeks and as council we urge residents to use water sparingly during this period.
"This is an annual thing in which pumping of water will be halted in-order to allow this maintenance process to take place but this does not mean there will be no water completely that's why we urge residents to avoid watering vegetables and other plants to serve the little which is coming. Normal pumping will resume as soon as the process is complete" said Muchatukwa.
Chiredzi Residents and Ratepayers Association (CHRRA) Chairperson Jonathan Muusha Mupamombe said residents were duly notified in time by council and ZINWA officials about the maintenance which is going on. He said they appreciate the efforts as they now know that it has become an annual thing hence the need for residents to use water sparingly during that period.
