Fourteen members of Simukai Heifer Project in Ward 6, Manyene South have received a heifer each at a function held at All Saints Primary School on Saturday.

The project is a community initiative with 56 members who are paying $21 each a month in order to get a heifer. The project is going to continue until every member gets a heifer.

The members also said that they are running this project as they wait to benefit from the Heifer International pass on a beast project.

William Kumbirai Munemo the Heifer International district chairperson said Heifer International started its breeding program in ward 4 where they donated 200 heifers and 20 bulls to 20 members, 150 sheep to members of ward 2 and 15 goats to members of ward 3 in Manyene area in order to eradicate poverty and enhance food security.

He said they started in ward 4 since it is a small scale farming area with good grazing. These will pass on the heifers to other farmers.

The Simukai Project members received the heifers under their scheme after a three- days' workshop where Munemo, Department of Agritex representative Vimbai Chipeture and Livestock Production department representatives, MelaniaVengesa, Loveness Tongogara and Wonderful Kimbini trained them on the management and the well keep of heifers, curing of diseases and also good leadership skills. They used the toss system in selecting the 14 members.

Some 10 members of another group of Simukai Heifer project in the same ward, in Marondamashanu area also received each a heifer last week.

Justin Rukato, the councilor for ward 6 who is also a member of Simukai Heifer project said the project is a good initiative that empowers people and help in eradicating poverty in the community. Rukato also said the training was fruitful as they got the knowledge on the well keep of heifers and curing of diseases.
