White farmers withheld residency permit info for exploitative reasons

There are claims several South African farmers withheld information regarding the application of residence and work permits from their Zimbabwean workers in order to continue exploiting them as cheap labour.

As a result, hundreds of the farm workers were deported after a moratorium extended to illegal immigrants expired.

Investigations last week showed that the farmers feared the workers – many of them professionals who emigrated at the height of Zimbabwe's economic downturn – would abandon them for greener pastures once their papers were in order.

They then decided to keep them in the dark and issued them with "farm identity cards".

Those interviewed said they only got to know about the regularisation process after immigration officials descended on them.
