School children are at risk of contracting water borne diseases as burst sewer pipes at Budiriro 1 Council Primary School are left unchecked.

Raw effluent is gushing to the play ground, exposing school children to diseases such and cholera and typhoid.

Parents and residents of Budiriro accused the Harare City Council of exacerbating the outbreak of diarrhoeal diseases by failing to address the collapsing sewer infrastructure and intermittent water cuts in most urban suburbs and schools.

The headmaster of the school, who refused to be named, said the sewer challenge at the school is a perennial issue as pipes continue to burst even after council workers rectify the problem.

Contacted for comment, Harare City Council Spokesperson, Mr Micheal Chideme said they are aware of the problem and will send the infrastructure teams to the scene.
