A Zimbabwe National Army soldier has been sentenced to eight months in prison after he tied his wife and one year-old son with a rope together before he sprinkling them with paraffin all over their bodies in an attempt to burn them.

Prince Moyo had pledged guilty to three counts of domestic violence when he appeared before Magistrate, Meo Rubwe.

Moyo will, however, have to save effective six months with hard labour after two months were suspended on condition of good behavior.

For the State, Michael Mhene told the court that on a date unknown but some time in February this year, Moyo arrived at his house in Mkoba Village 11 from Work after he got the news that his son, Junior was ill. Mhene said upon arriving home, Moyo started accusing the wife, Ms Gamuchirai Chisango of failing to notify him of their child's illness in time.

Mhene said Moyo who was also accusing the wife for not caring for their kid went on to take a bicycle cable which he used to beat up his wife several times all over the body. The court heard that Moyo then took a rope and tied the wife and son's hands together.

Moyo went on to grab a two litre container full of paraffin before he sprinkled the flammable liquid on Chisango and Junior's bodies intending to set them on fire. Chisango and the child, Junior, however, managed to sneak out of the house and sought refuge at a neighbour's house when Moyo got into another room where he intended to search for matches. The court heard that the following day, Moyo returned to his workplace at Battlefields, near Kwekwe.

Mhene said Chisango later visited Moyo's workplace and sneaked into his house where she intended to take her passport. The court heard that Moyo then caught up with Ms Chisango just outside the camp when she was on her way to the high way pick up point where she wanted to get transport back to Gweru. Moyo went on to beat up Chisango before a passerby later came and intervened to stop Moyo from further assaulting the wife.

Chisango went on to report the assault and the attempted arson case to the police at Battle Fields Police Station leading to Moyo's arrest.
