VICE President Phelekezela Mphoko yesterday donated 6,000 day-old broiler chicks to residents in Nkulumane constituency as part of the poultry project he unveiled last month.
The project, which is anchored on the country's economic blueprint, Zim-Asset, seeks to empower communities through utilising local resources. Two groups got 3,000 chicks each and last month he donated 3,000 chicks to more than 300 families in Nketa-Emganwini constituency's ward 24.
Vice President Mphoko has so far donated more than 15,000 chicks to Nkulumane residents. One of the 16 groups that have received the chicks is made up of disabled people. Addressing the beneficiaries before handing over the chicks, VP Mphoko said it was the duty of the leadership to develop communities.
"This is a programme that is meant to reduce poverty and bring development to our communities. It's our duty as leadership to make sure that communities are empowered through income-generating projects.
"President Mugabe wants his people to be independent and be able to take care of their families. All the groups that have benefited today must therefore ensure that their poultry projects are a success," said VP Mphoko. He said by giving the groups chicks, he was assisting them to kick-start their poultry projects which should improve their livelihoods.
"I'm giving you these chicks free of charge so that you start these income-generating projects to improve your standard of living. I will be disappointed if I come back and I'm told that all the chicks died," said VP Mphoko.
He warned the residents against unruly elements who he said were trying to sabotage the project.
"I'm told that there are some people who were telling beneficiaries not to feed the chickens. They accused me of trying to take over their constituency. What I want people to know is that I'm not a thief, a gambler or a dealer. I'm not even interested in being a Member of Parliament. I'm a straight forward person who wants to see people living better lives. I don't want to be paid for it," said VP Mphoko.
The project is set to spread to every part of the country. One of the beneficiaries Mr Zibion Sibanda from Ward 23 expressed gratitude to VP Mphoko for empowering them. "We're really grateful. This is what we call empowerment. We appreciate what the VP has given us and we will make him proud by making sure that the projects are successful. We've already prepared the fowl runs and the feeds so there's no going back," said Mr Sibanda.
Mrs Siphathisiwe Siziba from Ward 21 said: "We're really grateful to VP Mphoko for keeping his promise. We will stay focused just like him and make sure that he's proud of us."
Member of House of Assembly for Nkulumane constituency Killian Sibanda also thanked the VP for empowering his constituency. He urged the residents to embrace the project and work hard, adding that VP Mphoko will on Sunday donate another batch of chicks to residents in the same constituency.
