By-elections are looming after two parliamentary seats fell vacant following the expulsion of Norton legislator, Christopher Mutsvangwa from Zanu PF and the jailing of his Bikita West counterpart, Munyaradzi Kereke.

Clerk of Parliament, Mr Kennedy Chokuda told the ZBC News that the two cases of Mutsvangwa and Kereke will be handled differently.

He said while parliament just has to act according to the constitution in the case of Kereke, for the expelled Mutsvangwa, the matter will be dealt with when the ruling Zanu PF party writes notifying the house of the expulsion.

The Mutsvangwa case could be judged on the basis that a member of the National Assembly's seat falls vacant if the member ceases to belong to the political party which he or she was a member of when elected to the house.

On the Kereke issue, the constitution states that if a member is convicted and sentenced to imprisonment for six months or more, he or she ceases to be a parliamentarian.

Dr Kereke was convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison and will serve 10 years effectively.
