VICE-President Phelekezela Mphoko reportedly used his executive powers to personally release two Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) executives.
The pair, acting Zinara chief executive officer Moses Juma and board member Davison Norupiri where arrested on Wednesday.
Reports say they where facing corruption charges involving over $1 million.
However, Mphoko reportedly stormed Avondale Police Station on Wednesday night and greeted them. Said NewsDay : "The VP personally came to the police station and ordered us to release the two. He actually said: ‘I am the VP of the country and I want you to let my boys go'. There was nothing anyone could do and he actually asked for his name to be indicated as having been responsible for their release in the detention book,".
It is not clear what his interest are on the pair.
In court, Harare magistrate Vakayi Chikwekwe had a go at the prosecution for ordering the opening of records of the pair in their absence.
According to the state run Herald, Chikwekwe said "The State and Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) cannot account for the accused and it is clear the record was opened at State's instruction after giving their reference number.
