THE love for beer has landed two men from Gweru in jail after they stole meat from a parked car and exchanged it for a bottle of Gold Blend Whisky.
Tinashe Mutondo (36) and Givemore Churu (24) were convicted on their own plea of guilty to theft by Gweru Magistrate Mr Tayengwa Chibanda. In passing sentence, Mr Chibanda said he had taken into account that Mutondo was once convicted of theft while Churu was a first offender.
He sentenced Mutondo to six months in prison and suspended one month on condition of good behaviour and another one on condition he pays the complainant $20.
Churu was sentenced to four months imprisonment; one month was suspended on condition of good behaviour and another one on condition that he pays the complainant $20.
Prosecuting, Mr Lloyd Mavhiza told the court that on July 2, the two men were doing a piece job at Midlands State University when they connived to steal three plastic bags of meat from a car which was parked at the car park.
He said Mutondo and Churu went to Top Shop Beerhall in Senga and exchanged the two plastic bags of meat for a 750 ml bottle of whisky.
"At around 6PM, the two accused persons proceeded to Senga Shopping Centre to braai the meat from the remaining plastic bag," said Mr Mavhiza.
Two police officers became suspicious when the two accused invited patrons to join in the feasting and arrested them.
