Airzim workers return to work

NORMALCY returned at Air Zimbabwe yesterday with workers reporting for work following negotiations with management. On Thursday Air Zimbabwe workers held their bosses' hostage and slept at the airport in protest over outstanding salaries. But normalcy returned yesterday following negotiations with management.
The workers, however, gave management up to Monday next week to address their grievances.
Air Zimbabwe acting chief executive officer Mr Moses Mapanda confirmed the development in an interview with the Herald yesterday.
"Everything is now normal. We are in the process of paying them. Operations went smoothly today and everything is in order," Mr Mapanda said.
A representative of the workers said they had given management up to Monday to address their grievances.
The struggling Air Zimbabwe owes workers US$5,6 million in outstanding salaries. The national airline is facing a number of challenges among them an ageing fleet.
Customers have also lost faith in the airline as a result of perennial labour disputes that have negatively impacted on its image. The parastatal is struggling to settle the salary arrears because of cash flow problems. On Thursday, Mr Mapanda confirmed Air Zimbabwe was battling to pay workers their outstanding salaries.
