Three members of the same family in Buhera died while a fourth sustained serious burns after their hut was struck by a lightning bolt following rains that swept across the district last week.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Inspector Leonard Chabata said Ms Juliet Machona and her twin daughters Charity and Adline (11) died on the spot after being struck by the vicious bolt.
Her other daughter, Desire (16), sustained severe burns. She is receiving treatment at Murambinda Hospital. Insp Chabata said the four were preparing supper on the evening of November 14.
The rains began, prompting local villager Mr Shoti Mureri to seek refuge at the homestead. A crack of lightning suddenly ripped across the homestead, tossing Desire and Mr Mureri out of the hut and killing the mother and twins instantly.
Mr Mureri escaped unscathed.
In a related incident, a Rusape man died on the spot after he was struck by lightning while cultivating his maize field alongside his wife.
Insp Chabata said Mr Willard Mapara (37) of Village 32 under Chief Domborembizi's realm was burnt to death.
"We are very worried with the rate at which these deaths involving lightning strikes are being recorded and do not know what can be done to avoid them," he said.
