MDC-T led Harare City Council has given illegal settlers a short notice to leave the land they occupy before it moves to demolish the illegal houses.
HCC spokesperson Michel Chideme said all new land invasions are not being considered for regularisation. Between September and December 2015, HCC demolished over 200 illegal structures across the city and arrested land barons implicated in the property invasions.
A schedule released by council in June showed that 128 cooperatives had allocate themselves land around the city in Mabelreign, Mabvuku, Mufakose, Glennorah, Glenview, Budidriro, Warren Park, Kuwadzana and Kambuzumaa withb17 of them before the courts.
Chideme said the illegal invaders on Porta and Churu farms should make way for proper planning of the land which will be used for its original intended use.
Meanwhile, informal traders operating from Glen View 8 Complex owe an estimated $856 000 to Harare City Council in outstanding fees and rent.
Acting Harare town clerk Josephine Ncube said the $856 000 accumulated after vendors were duped by space barons who made them pay the fees to them instead of council. Ncube said council had since assessed the extent of the damage and was considering reconstruction of the factory shells.
At the Gazaland Home Industries in Highfield, the committee found informal traders working in unhygienic conditions with one toilet for hundreds of people. Ncube said council was finalising plans to construct new factory shells. In Glen View about 1 200 factory shells will be constructed at a cost of $7,5 million.
