A RUSAPE man allegedly axed his 79-year-old father to death following an argument over a suitable cooking place.
Police said Alois Hamadziripi (33) faces murder charges after he struck his father, Mr Cephas Tandadzayi, with an axe three times in the head. It is alleged that on October 13 Hamadziripi of Village D, Nyahukwe area under Chief Makoni, wanted to cook food in his bedroom.
However, this did not go down well with the late Mr Tandadzayi, who is said to have told his son to use the kitchen hut. Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Leonard Chabata said an argument then ensued resulting in Hamadziripi assaulting his father with clenched fists. "Hamadziripi is alleged to be of a violent disposition and had been in the habit of assaulting his father," said Inspector Chabata.
"On the day in question the accused wanted to cook food in his bedroom, a move which was opposed by his father resulting in the two exchanging harsh words. Hamadziripi then started assaulting his father, but some villagers failed to restrain him fearing for their lives because of his violent nature."
Inspector Chabata said Hamadziripi then dragged his father into a room where he locked the door and continued assaulting him. After about 10 minutes a group of villagers rallied up and broke the door.
Inspector Chabata said Hamadziripi then fled the homestead. "When the neighbours got into the hut they saw Tandadzayi lying in a pool of blood with a bloodied axe by his side. After a hot pursuit, the villagers caught up with
Hamadziripi a few kilometres from the homestead hiding in a bush," said Inspector Chabata. "The villagers then reported the case to the police leading to Hamadziripi's arrest. Inspector Chabata said a post-mortem revealed that Mr Tandadzayi died from injuries sustained after an axe attack. He said Hamadziripi was in police custody while investigations were continuing.
