Harare Residents Trust has reported that a 10 day old baby was stolen at Old Tafara Clinic last week after the mother was congratulated with $0.50 by a woman who was sitting next to her in the queue for giving birth to a beautiful baby.

"The woman who gave her the money then asked her to go and buy cheap pampers at Old Tafara Shopping Centre. The mother left her child with the stranger then rushed to the supermarket," said the trust.

"When she returned at the clinic she did not find the woman then she told the nurses and the nurses hastily spread the news. Vendors who sell outside the clinic informed the nurses that they over heard a call conversation of a woman who said she has the baby."

Then trust said the nurses were shown the woman who was standing at the corner holding the baby and they grabbed the child and locked the woman in one of the rooms at the clinic.

"They questioned the woman and she said she comes from Kadoma and they are a group who steal babies and sell them. They informed the police and the woman was taken to Mabvuku Police Station who are now handling the matter," said the trust.

"The HRT advises women to be aware of these women and make sure that you do not leave your child with a stranger."
