Another war vet leader arrested

The crack down on 'rebel' war veterans has intensified withZimbabwe Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) secretary -general Victor Matemadanda being the latest casualty.

According to reports, vocal Matemadanda was allegedly nabbed by five police officers from his Gokwe home early this morning and taken to Harare's Law and Order section.

Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), said Matemadanda was likely to be charged with subverting a constitutionally-elected government.

On Wednesday, Bulawayo24.com revealed that Douglas Mahiya who is the veterans spokesperson had been arrested.

Addressing war veterans yesterday President Robert Mugabe vowed to harshly punishment war veterans who wrote the controversial communiqué calling on him to step done.

Mugabe told thousands of his supporters outside the ruling party's headquarters in Harare on Wednesday that "Once we find out who wrote that statement, the party will punish them."

He added that during Zimbabwe's liberation struggle, the party had disciplined rebels by "detaining them underground [and] feeding them there."
