President Robert Mugabe says the recent gazetting of the SI 64 is
meant to protect local industry.
Mugabe said this while addressing a Zanu-PF crowd at the National Heroes Acre on Heroes Day (today).
The 92-year-old blamed #ThisFlag Pastor Evan Mawarire for getting involved in the issue.
He said the law is meant to help the country and the local farmers of commodities such as tomatoes and other perishables that were rotting because people preferred to buy goods from South Africa that they deemed to be cheaper.
Mugabe said Mawarire then pounced on the issue but he added that all countries do such things to prevent 'dumbing.' He said no one would like to see second hand goods entering the country.
Mugabe also said that South Africa protects its producers giving an example that they asked that drugs from Zimbabwe be flown in by plane rather than transported by road so that they would be more expensive once on the South African market.

He believes that this is an issue that needs discussion between Zimbabwe and South Africa.
