Beitbridge-Chirundu highway: Calls to engage local contractors

The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructure Development has recommended that local contractors be given priority in the dualisation and expansion of the over 800 km Beitbridge–Chirundu highway.

The committee says the bulk of the $2.7 billion on dualisation and expansion of the project should be implemented by local construction industry players.

The chairperson of the committee Dexter Nduna said since 80 percent of the construction material is expected to be mobilised locally, it is prudent that a number of contractors along the route be taken on board during the construction project.

The project is expected to be divided into eight sections of about 100km each.

Construction of a ring road in Harare will be part of the mega project.

One hopes that after the awarding of the contracts to locals, they will not shortchange the transport ministry by doing a shoddy job.
