A MAN from Bulilima has been fined $20 for stealing a bottle of whisky worth $4 from Greens Supermarket in Plumtree. Gift Moyo (32) of Gwambe area was convicted on his own plea of guilty to theft by Plumtree magistrate, Mr Livard Philemon. He was fined $20 and will be jailed for eight days in case of default. Moyo said he stole the whisky as his friend who was supposed to pay for it ditched him at the supermarket.
"I was in the supermarket and when I was standing by the till I saw that my friend who was supposed to pay for the whisky was leaving and he did not leave me any money. "That was when I also decided to follow him out of the shop with the bottle of whisky but when I entered the shop my intention was to buy and not steal," he said.
Prosecuting, Ms Jenipher Maone Shuche said on August 10 at around 8PM, Moyo stole a 750 millilitre bottle of Two-keys whisky and went out without paying for it. She said Moyo was intercepted by Mr Luckmore Chipadza, a loss control officer at the supermarket.
Ms Shuche said Mr Chipadza recovered the bottle of whisky hidden under Moyo's jacket.
