War vets deny backing opposition parties

War veterans have dismissed mounting speculations that they have joined forces with opposition parties to remove President Robert Mugabe from power.
In recent weeks, relations between war veterans and Zanu PF have hit an all-time low.
The veterans in July unveiled a shocking attack on Mugabe, denouncing him as dictatorial and corrupt.
In retaliation, Mugabe threatened them with "severe" punishment and police arrested several of their leaders.
However, the veterans spokesperson Douglas Mahiya rebuffed the claims.
"We are shocked at the accusations ( we have joined forces with opposition parties), they are a continuation of the vilification of freedom fighters that we have seen G40," he is quoted by NewsDay.
"It is disconcerting that Zanu PF expects war veterans to show a different psyche to the one that is being exhibited by the rest of the country.
"If the party had done something for war veterans, it would have been better; instead they have continued to vilify us. We do not know any military general who goes to war, wins and then turns against the very troops that won him the war."
