A MAN from Gweru has committed suicide after testing positive for HIV.

Leeroy Dzviti (34) of Old Ascot suburb hanged himself from a tree near a traffic circle along Shurugwi Road which is popularly known as Senga roundabout.

It is understood that Dzviti, a motor mechanic, tested HIV positive last week and was in denial about his status.

Acting Midlands Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende said Dzviti's body was found hanging from a tree by the roadside along the Gweru-Shurugwi highway in the early hours of yesterday.

"I can confirm that we're investigating a case of sudden death. A male adult was found hanging from a tree by the roadside along Gweru-Shurugwi highway in the wee hours of today (yesterday).

"The body was discovered by a passerby who alerted police who then attended to the scene. The recovered body was taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital for a post-mortem," she said.

An HIV test result slip, which was in Dzviti's jacket pocket together with his medical record book seen by The Chronicle, confirmed that he had tested HIV positive.

When The Chronicle visited the scene at around 8AM, Dzviti's body was still hanging from the tree.

Police searched him and found a small exercise book with an HIV test results slip inside.

Dzviti's friend who spoke on condition of anonymity said the deceased stopped coming to work after testing positive for HIV last week.

"Dzviti tested positive for HIV last week and from then he stopped coming to work. He seemed to be stressed.

"He was supposed to start ART this week. I last saw him in town on Sunday together with my younger brother whom he was staying with in Ascot," said the friend.
