BAZ Advertises For an independent TV Station Licence

The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) has advertised for applications for a television station in the country.
"In terms of Section 10 of the Broadcasting Services Act (Chapter 12:06), the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe hereby invites applications for licences to provide content distribution service class of broadcasting service," the BAZ said in a statement released Sunday.
"Content distribution service means a service provided by a content distributor comprising content aggregated within or outside Zimbabwe that is made available in Zimbabwe with or without payment of a subscription fee and the reception is through satellite transmission."
The BAZ said the application fee for the licenses is $2 500 while the basic license fee for the winner of the applications will be $100 000 per annum and the license will be for last for 10 years.
The deadline for the applications is January 31, 2012.
Two new 'independent' radio stations were granted licenses by the BAZ .The BAZ gave licenses to AB Communications owned by Supa Mandiwanzira, a former broadcaster with the state controlled ZBC and to Zimbabwe Newspapers group of companies (Zimpapers) something that was criticised by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's office and MDC party.
Tsvangirai's office has said the licenses were awarded by an 'illegimate' body and that a new BAZ board will be set up after the premier and President Robert Mugabe agreed to reconstitute the board and bring in independent and agreed representatives.
