A BULAWAYO woman allegedly lost her cell phone to three men who pretended to be coming to her rescue as she screamed for help while a man tried to rape her.

The trio, a court heard, grabbed the woman's cellphone and left her at the mercy of Moses Dube (47), who allegedly went on to rape her.

Dube yesterday told the court the woman made up the rape accusation after picking his pocket and getting away with his entire salary.

The court heard how Dube followed the victim as she left Siphilanzima bar in Douglasdale where she was drinking with her two friends.

Dube pleaded not guilty to a rape charge.

Bulawayo magistrate Miss Evelyn Mashavakure remanded him to September 17 for continuation of trial.

The woman did not show up at court to testify.

Prosecuting, Mr Simbarashe Manyiwa told the court that on September 2 at around 8.30PM, the victim was drinking beer with her friends.

"Accused person followed her when she left the bar. He asked to have sex with the complainant but she refused. He insulted her asking why she was refusing to have sex when she was wearing a short dress," said Mr Manyiwa.

"Accused used an unknown object to hit the complainant on the head. She screamed out for help and three men came to the scene. The three took her cell phone and ran off. Accused stabbed complainant on the thighs then raped her."

Dube denied the allegations saying the woman is a known prostitute and he approached her for sex services.

"She charged me $5 for short time. I told her we would look for change after having sex and she agreed.

"She left me at the bar claiming she wanted to see someone. I decided to look for change while I waited for her to return. That was when I realised I had no money left on me," said Dube.

He said he had all his salary of $250 in his shirt pocket.

"I asked around from my friends if they had seen her around the bar but they all said they last saw her with me. It struck me then that she had taken my money and ran away. I tried to look for her at her house but she was not there. This thing of rape and losing a cell phone is a lie.

"Your Worship honestly if she had been raped I'm sure she would have been here to testify for herself. But her absence shows that she is lying."
