The MP for Chiredzi West, Darlington Chiwa has allegedly received death threats from several people including those in the State security sector for his resistance to the planned takeover of Tongaaat Hulett sugarcane fields that that will see 2 000 workers jobless.

Chiwa told The Masvingo Mirror that his life was in danger and he has beefed up his security. He said some of the threats came from people that he knows and some were indirect.

Chiwa has relentlessly fought the acquisition of 4 000 hectares of sugarcane fields from Tongaat which were parceled out to senior Government officials, Zanu PF officials and their relatives.

The acquisition is led and viciously defended by the Minister of State for Masvingo State Shuvai Mahofa.

He said he knows the names of the people who want to hurt him as some of them have openly approached him or called him telling him that he was growing too big and he would be reduced to size soon.

"Last night I received a call from one of them who told me that I was inviting  trouble through my actions. I don't fear them and I am must warn them that I am up to the task.

"As an MP I will not fold my hands when workers lose their jobs due to greedy politicians. I am doing this to ensure that what the President declared on this issue will win the day. The President called for a stop to the acquisition," said Chiwa.
