An Epworth man suspected to be part of a gang that ransacked a Total Service Station in Warren Park 1, Harare and stole $12 000 appeared in court on Friday. Daniel Jenje (33) appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Bianca Makwande facing robbery charges. He was remanded to Monday for his bail application.
The prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa alleged that on August 15 at around 2am, Jenje teamed up with Alouis Nyamadzawo and Shadreck Madzima, who have already appeared in court together with Munyaradzi Chikaka, Prince Makodza, Ronnie and Wilbert, who are on the run.
Armed with a pick and two five-pound hammers, the group drove to Total Service Station in Warren Park 1 in a white Nissan Hardbody pick up truck. At the service station, the group allegedly confronted fuel attendants Guide Ndawana and Barcilio Rutaya, who were sitting in a parked Toyota Raum.
It is alleged the group ordered the pair to disembark, but sensing danger they refused and locked themselves in the vehicle. Using the hammer, it is alleged one of the accused smashed the driver's door window and pulled the pair out.
The court heard that the group searched Ndawana and Rutaya and stole $85 and a Nokia cellphone. It is alleged they tied up the fuel attendants using electric cables and carried them to the back of the building.
One of the accused persons was left guarding Ndawana and Rutaya while the others went to break into the service station shop.
They allegedly used a hammer to detach a wall cash safe containing $8 500.
They broke another Chubb Security safe in the shop containing $3 500, it is alleged. After loading their loot in the vehicle, the group sped off.
They later dumped the safe.
Police investigations led to their arrest.
