Legislators expecting to pocket US$11 000 each, from outstanding allowances

Principals in the inclusive government have agreed to pay the outstanding allowances owed to legislators totalling US$3, 3 million backdated to 2008.
Members of Parliament who had not been getting their sitting allowances since 2008 are expected to get a windfall as the principals of the three main political parties have agreed to pay the legislators who have not received any payment since they assumed office in 2008.
In an interview, Deputy Prime Minster, Professor Arthur Mutambara said after extensive consultations with his two counterparts, Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, a decision was taken to ensure that the welfare of the legislators is catered for.
Professor Mutambara said it had been recommended that each MP would be given US$75 per sitting backdated to 2008, adding that the decision is not a result of threats by the legislators that they would not pass the budget, but the executive is merely respecting the third arm of the State.
Each legislator is expected to pocket about US$11 000.
While on the surface, everything had appeared well at Parliament Building, discontent was the order of the day.
