The European Parliament has adopted a joint motion on Zimbabwe in which it expresses serious concern about the increase in violence against demonstrators in recent months.
The motion, agreed by all groups in the European Parliament, states that the European Parliament is worried about the rise in the number of arbitrary arrests of human rights defenders and those engaging in peaceful and lawful demonstrations and urges that the rule of law be respected and that the constitution be upheld.
The European Parliament also strongly condemned the obstruction of food aid for political gain, following reports by the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission.
The need to continue the political dialogue with the Zimbabwean authorities was also stressed.
