Transport operator nabbed for smuggling goods from Botswana

A transport operator has been arrested while driving along the Plumtree road to Bulawayo carrying goods allegedly smuggled into the country from Botswana.
Martin Muzamba (36) a cross border transporter from Emakhandeni in Bulawayo plying Botswana Zimbabwe route was not asked to plead to the charge of smuggling when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Adeline Mbeure. The magistrate remanded him to September 28 for trial.
The court heard that on June 16 this year at 11pm accused unlawfully used the Botswana registered vehicle a Toyota Hiace to transport various electrical goods, household goods and groceries from Botswana into Zimbabwe without paying duty.
He was intercepted by the Mineral and Border Control unit police officers at the 24 kilometre peg along Plumtree- Bulawayo road leading to his arrest.
The vehicle was taken to Zimbabwe Revenue Authority when the transporter's clients were also made to pay fines for their undeclared goods.
