The Zimbabwe Republic Police is lobbying for a legislation against pirate taxis and kombi crews.
In an interview with State Media, the Officer commanding Police National Traffic, Senior Assistant Commissioner Fellie Chikowero-Mjanga said there is need for a new law to deal with pirate taxis commonly known as 'mushikashika' and omnibus crews.
Snr Asst Comm Chikowero-Mjanga said the police "want an amendment of the legislation to take into account of mushikashika."
She said the police force had noted that preventative measures would ingrain discipline among motorists.
Snr Asst Comm Chikowero-Mjanga expressed concern over some kombi drivers who were illegally employing touts to load their vehicles especially in the CBD.
She said the practice is widespread in Harare and at one point a cop was thumped down while upholding the law.
She encouraged kombi proprietors to be strict with their drivers on such practices.
