The president of Zimbabwe Sugar Milling Industry Workers' Union (ZISMIWU) Freedom Madungwe has fired Captain Faster Gono as the secretary general of the Union.

Ironically Capt Gono worked as a secretary of ZISMIWU while he is a serving senior member of the Zimbabwe National Army.

Madungwe fired Captain Gono as ZISMIWU Secretary General on Tuesday after the later attempted to fire him (Madungwe) for supporting a demonstration against the acquisition of Tongaat Hulett land by leading Zanu PF politicians which will see 2 000 workers losing jobs. Madungwe gave several reasons for firing Gono including that the later was a sugarcane farmer who in essence is an employer and should therefore not be representing interests of workers. He also accused Capt Gono of insurbordination.

Madungwe ordered Gono to immediately leave union offices as his terminal benefits are being worked out. He advised Gono to join the various associations of farmers that have mushroomed in the district and stop dragging the union into Zanu PF factional fights. Earlier, Gono who is also believed to be one of the beneficiaries of the controversial land grab had written a letter to fire Madungwe accusing him of supporting a demo denigrating Minister of State for Masvingo, Shuvai Mahofa and the Minister of Lands and Rural Resettlements Douglas Mombeshora.

Gono was supported by Godfrey Katerere, Tovonga Vandirai and Brawl Chikandiwa in dismissing Madungwe. Madungwe however hit back and fired all the three citing that they were no longer members of ZISMIWU after they were fired from Tongaat for various misdemeanors.

Gono had written to suspend Madungwe with effect from September 26, 2016. The letter said Godfrey Katerere had been appointed the acting president of the union.

However, Madungwe said his suspension was null and void as the three executive members who signed his suspension are no longer employees of Tongaat Hullet after they were fired from employment earlier this year.

He also said he was mandated by workers as the president to represent them and cannot fold his hands while people are engaging in actions which render the workers jobless that's why he supported demonstrations organised by other stakeholders.
