41 toddlers languish in jail

A total of 41 children all below 36 months  are holed up in prisons countrywide with their mothers, prisons public relations officer Superintendent Priscilla Mthembo  has said.

"We have a total of 41 children accompanying their mothers in prison, comprising 19 boys and 22 girls below the ages of 36 months."

Most prisons are said to be filthy and lack basic facilities and food.

She said 131 prisoners who include  eight are back behind bars after being released on  General Amnesty  recently.
